Mammography
Mammography is used to examine the human breast for diagnostic screening. The purpose of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer. Ultrasound is used for further evaluation with the mammogram at our center for masses not seen on mammogram. For average women mammography is recommended every two years between the ages of 40-75.
Mammography is the process of using low energy X-rays (usually around 30kVp) to examine human breast for diagnosis and screening. Mammography is a specific type of breast imaging to detect cancer early before women experience symptoms- when it is most treatable. Regular mammograms are the best tests doctors use to look for early signs of breast cancer, sometimes up to three years before it can be felt. It can be used to check for symptoms of breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. It can also be used if you have a lump or other signs of breast cancer. Mammography is also useful in discovering tumors too small to be felt. To avoid any discomfort it is suggested that you avoid scheduling a mammogram for the week before or during menstruation when breasts may be more sensitive. Also one should not wear deodorant, powder, or cream under arms so as not to interfere with the quality of the mammogram. We have female technicians to perform mammography at our center so the sex of the technician should not be of any concern. For getting a mammogram, you are required to stand in front of an x-ray machine. The technician places your breast between plastic plates. The plates press your breast and make it flat. This helps get a clear image.
